3,000 to 4,000 Turkish Cypriot girls were sold into marriage with Arab men between 1930 and 1950; their story is largely untold and their fate mostly unknown. In a unique volume, author Neriman Cahit tries to find these "lost" women—to reconnect them with the island of their origin—using previously unpublished sources and information gathered through personal interviews and painstaking research. In the first of a series of presentations of Brides for Sale, the author answered questions from an interested audience and the press at an event organized by the Turkish Cypriot University Women's Association (TCUWA) at their offices in the Arab Ahmet neighborhood of Nicosia on Monday, June 9. Translated into English by TCUWA, Brides for Sale was published as part of the Sharing History, Arts, Research and Education in Cyprus (SHARE) initiative—a unique partnership between the Costas and Rita Severis Foundation, TCUWA, the NGO Support Center and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). SHARE's objective is to build bridges between local communities and increase the potential for improved understanding and peaceful coexistence in Cyprus, including through support for activities like these around Brides for Sale.
