After the Second World War, when Britain decided to withdraw from its colonies and recognize their independence, the question of Cyprus’s new status created what came to be known as the Cyprus Problem.
Taking advantage of this historic decision by Britain, the Greek Cypriots and Greeks launched a determined political campaign to realize their long-standing dream of ENOSIS, meaning the annexation of Cyprus to Greece. Meanwhile, with the support of Greece, the Greek Cypriots established an armed terrorist organization in Cyprus called EOKA, led by Colonel Grivas from the Greek Army.
Closely monitoring these developments, the Turkish General Staff and political authorities valued friendship with Greece, their NATO ally, and believed that the Cyprus issue could be resolved peacefully through negotiations among the relevant states.
However, when EOKA’s terrorist activities—initially directed against the British Colonial Administration—later began to target Turkish Cypriots as well, a historic decision was taken: “In order to ensure the security of Turkish Cypriots, an armed, clandestine organization must be established, and this organization must be fully supported by all the means of the Turkish Government.”
This book tells the legendary story of why and how the secret organization known as the Turkish Resistance Organization (TMT) was founded underground forty-four years ago.
